Red-tailed bumblebee
Bombus lapidarius
Severity of bites
High
Severe damage. This can include life-threatening allergic reactions, transmission of serious diseases, or insects that have particularly painful or harmful bites or stings.
Description
Red-tailed bumblebee is a fascinating species, known for its unique behavior of defending food sources fiercely. In terms of diet, this bee feeds on nectar and pollen, mostly from red clover and foxglove plants. There are no known health risks directly associated with red-tailed bumblebee, although like any bee, it can sting when threatened. Its distinct trait is the bright red tail, setting it apart from other bumblebee species.
What are the symptoms of a Red-tailed bumblebee bite or sting?
Localised pain and swelling
The sting of a red-tailed bumblebee usually causes immediate localised pain. This is often followed by redness and swelling in the area of the sting. Some people may experience severe swelling and inflammation.
Itching
Itching around the area of the sting is a common symptom. However, if a person is allergic to red-tailed bumblebee venom, they may develop severe itching all over their body.
Allergic reactions
Although rare, some people can have an allergic reaction to a red-tailed bumblebee sting leading to symptoms like difficulty in breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, rapid pulse, dizziness, or a severe rash known as hives. For those who are allergic, a single sting can trigger a serious reaction called anaphylaxis.
Severe reactions
For those hypersensitive to red-tailed bumblebee venom or multiple stings, severe reactions can occur including nausea, vomiting, fainting, convulsions, rapid fall in blood pressure and, in some extreme cases, anaphylactic shock.
What are the treatments for a Red-tailed bumblebee bite or sting?
Immediate action
Immediately after being stung by a red-tailed bumblebee, it's important to carefully remove the stinger if it is left behind in the skin. This should be done as quickly as possible to minimize the amount of venom injected.
Cool compress
Apply a cool compress to the sting to help reduce pain and swelling.
Avoid itching
Avoid scratching or rubbing the area to prevent further inflammation and possible skin infection.
Medical attention
Seek immediate medical attention if showing signs of an allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, severe swelling, intense pain, or signs of infection like pus and increased redness at the sting site.
How to prevent a Red-tailed bumblebee bite or sting?
Cover skin
When in areas where red-tailed bumblebee are known to inhabit, it's best to cover as much skin as possible with clothing to reduce the chance of a sting.
Avoid disturbing nests
Red-tailed bumblebee are more likely to sting when their nests are threatened or disturbed, so it's advisable to keep a safe distance and avoid any direct contact.
Avoid strong fragrances
Strong fragrances from soaps, shampoos, and perfumes can attract red-tailed bumblebee.
Insect repellent
Use of an approved insect repellent may offer some protection against red-tailed bumblebee.
Consult a professional
In case of a red-tailed bumblebee infestation, consult a pest control professional.
