Hairy rove beetle

Hairy rove beetle

Creophilus maxillosus

A species of Creophilus

Hairy rove beetle can most often be found in wooded areas from spring to autumn, particularly where there are decaying animals (carrion). They feed on both the carrion and the maggots that feed on decaying animals. They have a defensive chemical that they can release from glands in their abdomen when threatened.

How and Where Can You Find Hairy rove beetle at Different Life Stages
Larva Hairy rove beetle larvae are found in decaying organic matter, such as carcasses or meat. To find them, search in these environments using gloves and tools for safe handling.
Pupal Hairy rove beetle pupae could be within the soil or leaf litter near the food sources of the larval stage. They can be located by carefully sifting through these materials.
Adult Hairy rove beetle adults are attracted to decomposing materials. Spotting them may involve visiting areas with carrion or where there's a concentration of flying insects nearby. Gentle flipping over stones or logs could also reveal their presence.

Are Hairy rove beetle harmful to humans?

Defensive aggression. Some rove beetles have well-developed mouthparts that can pinch attackers, and some secrete irritant substances when under threat. But most varieties do not affect human health.
Due to rotten meat without a good handle timely in the house or other unknown conditions, there have been examples of Creophilus maxillosus breeding. Containing irritant substances, it has certain risks and is troublesome for housewives.

Among more than 600 species in Paederus, about 20 types of body fluids have been recorded to cause irritation to human skin and result in dermatitis.
The body fluids damage of rove beetles to human skin is the infection caused by direct or indirect contact with body fluids from crushed worms. Here are some possible symptoms:
  • Burning sensation.
  • Swelling sensation.
  • Pain.
  • Livid red skin.
  • The appearance of white herpes may further expand into strips or slices.
Even after healing, there will still be scars on the skin. If found early and handled well, the deposited pigment will gradually disperse.

Where do Hairy rove beetle come from?

Enter by accident. In suitable environmental conditions, the adults grow fast with abundant populations and flow into the house.
Be attracted by food. It will be attracted by the smell of spoiled edible meat that left in the corner.
Be attracted by carcasses. Naught children or pets forget the bodies of other insects or small animals in the corner of the house and fail to clean them up in time. Rove beetles follow the smell of corruption into the room.

What is the most effective prevention against Hairy rove beetle?

Clean up potential shelters. Rove beetles prefer to hide under the cover. So it is advised to actively clean up the rotten wood, garbage and weeds accumulated or scattered around the house.
Maintain hygiene. Don't pile up and store too many waste materials indoors. Clean and tidy up frequently. Find and drive away rove beetles in time.
Have good habits. Close the window behind you.
Fix the leak. Check the screen window, screen door and other possible damages and gaps of the house. Repair them in time.

Reduce lights. Due to the phototaxis of rove beetles, the unnecessary lights can not be turned on at night, which can save energy and avoid many insects following the light. If you are used to sleeping with the light on, it is advised to draw curtains with better shading performance or use a small bedside lamp instead.

Manage ingredients. Be aware of the edible meat at home and make reasonable arrangements. Don't forget the meat that hasn't been cooked and eaten in time. Throw it away or put it into the refrigerator timely. The meat foam that falls into the kitchen gap and remains in the kitchen utensils during cooking should be cleaned up. The meat foam has a great attraction to rove beetles and other harmful organisms.

Hairy rove beetle is a voracious predator that hunts both in its larval and adult stages. It primarily seeks to feed itself and is often found on carrion, where it also preys on larvae of flies and other insects that are attracted to the decomposing material. This insect's hunting strategy not only aids in feeding itself but also helps to keep the population of certain pests in check.

The monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is the most recognizable butterfly in North America. It is best known for its appearance, but should be better known for the fact that it has a 3000-mile migration that takes the butterfly 4 generations to complete.
