This iridescent blue or green beetle has a sturdy body adapted to its life spent largely in woodlands. It matures by undergoing complete metamorphosis, starting as a larva that feeds ravenously on carcasses before transforming into a less voracious adult. With chemoreceptors fine-tuned to detect the faintest whiff of decay, it plays a critical role in the ecosystem by recycling nutrients from the deceased organisms it consumes. As an adult, its diet shifts to include more vegetative matter and fewer carrion-based meals.

Oiceoptoma noveboracense is most commonly found in deciduous forests or in grasslands and fields. It will less frequently inhabit marshes. When the species is found in a marsh, the area is typically prone to seasonal inundation. This causes the marsh to superficially resemble a dried field habitat. O. noveboracense is found from the Atlantic coast of the Northeastern United States, extending along the northern edge of the prairies west to the Rocky Mountains. It may be present as far south as Texas.
