It is a small to medium-sized, long-legged dragonfly coloured black-metallic and yellow. In both males and females the inboard edge of the hindwing is rounded.

The wingspan is about 3 cm. Adults are brown, with an orange patch on each hindwing ending in an eyespot. The underside of the wings is brown with two eyespots on the hindwings.

Cyclochila australasiae measures about 4 cm in length, with a wingspan of 10 - 13 cm. Diverse colour forms are seen, the most common being predominantly green or brownish yellow. It has red eyes.

The cephalothorax is black in colour with a bluish metallic sheen. It is covered with small white hairs (setae). The carapace (upper part of the cephalothorax) is rectangular in shape. They can be found in white, yellow, or red colour morphs. Jewel spiders found later in autumn (from March to April) are also sometimes melanistic, being entirely dark brown to black in coloration.
