Purseweb spiders
Scientific name: Atypidae
Description
Contrary to popular belief, Atypidae do not weave the typical aerial webs to catch their prey. Instead, they construct fascinating tube-like structures attached to tree trunks or soil. These purse-like webs act as both a cocoon for protection and a cunning trap for unwary insects. When an insect touches the outside of the web, the spider detects the vibrations and strikes through the web, dragging the prey inside. This remarkable adaptation showcases an exceptional evolutionary path diverging greatly from their arachnid cousins.
