Scientific name: Automeris
Description
Automeris moths are distinguished by their large, striking eyespots on their hind wings, which they use as defense mechanisms. When threatened, these moths reveal their hind wings, startling potential predators with the sudden appearance of what looks like large eyes. Contrary to some myths, these eye-like patterns do not emit light, nor do they hypnotize predators, but simply mimic the eyes of larger animals to create a moment of hesitation, allowing the moth to escape.
