Lizard barklice
Scientific name: Caeciliusidae
Description
The Caeciliusidae family, commonly known as booklice or psocids, may evoke the image of harmful pests destroying old books. However, these tiny insects, often found in aged paper due to the molds that grow on glue, are generally harmless to the books themselves. Although their presence signals high humidity, which indirectly risks damaging paper, they primarily feed on the microscopic molds and starches, not the paper. Contrary to common belief, booklice do not consume the paper or bindings directly; they simply thrive in the environment that old books provide. Thus, Caeciliusidae are more a symptom of environmental conditions than a cause of destruction.
