Broad-winged damselflies
Scientific name: Calopterygidae
Description
Calopterygidae sport vibrant, often metallic bodies and wings that might remind one of stained glass artwork, enhancing their visual appeal. A common error is to confuse them with their relatives, the dragonflies. However, members of Calopterygidae can be distinguished by their wings which, unlike dragonflies, remain parallel to the body when at rest. Their beauty and hunting skill make them not only a subject of entomological study but also a symbol of the need for freshwater conservation. Such aquatic environments are crucial for their nymphs, which are equally voracious, preying on mosquito larvae and other aquatic invertebrates.
