Description
Chironomus are fascinating for their abilities to thrive in a variety of aquatic environments, from clear streams to heavily polluted waters. Surprisingly, while often mistaken for mosquitoes due to their appearance, Chironomus are harmless as adults since they do not bite or spread diseases. Their larvae, known as bloodworms for their bright red color, are crucial in freshwater ecosystems, playing a key role in the food web and aiding in the breakdown of organic materials.
