Description
Members of the Cicadidae family, are celebrated for their iconic summer serenades, but these vocal virtuosos sing not from their throats but through structures called tymbals located on their abdomens. Contrary to the myth that cicadas are merely pests, these insects play a critical role in ecosystems, aiding in the pollination of certain plants and serving as a vital food source for numerous bird species. Emerging every 13 or 17 years, some cicada broods synchronize their arrival in massive numbers, a survival strategy to overwhelm predators through sheer quantity—an astonishing phenomenon of nature.
