Armored scale insects
Scientific name: Diaspididae
Description
Members of the Diaspididae, commonly known as armored scale insects, often go unnoticed due to their minuscule size and sedentary adult lives. Contrary to what one might guess from their unassuming appearance, these creatures wield a uniquely sophisticated form of protection: a hard, plate-like covering that shields them from predators and environmental hazards. Although the protective armor gives them a mechanical plant-like quality, these insects are far from passive. They are notorious sap-suckers in the botanical world, drawing nourishment directly from plants, to the dismay of gardeners and farmers globally. This defensive shield, while beneficial, also complicates pest control strategies, making them a resilient adversary in the agricultural sector.
