Gargoyle mantids
Scientific name: Empusidae
Description
Belonging to the family Empusidae, the members of this group are often mistaken for stick insects due to their elongated bodies and cryptic appearance. A fascinating trait of Empusidae is their predatory behavior, using their raptorial forelegs to snatch prey in a manner similar to praying mantises. Interestingly, while they are masters of disguise, their ability to change color and blend into surroundings is a myth. These insects utilize their surroundings by remaining motionless, rather than changing colors. This makes them excellent examples of adaptive evolution, where morphology complements behavior to enhance survival strategies.
