Velvet spiders
Scientific name: Eresidae
Description
The Eresidae family, also known as velvet spiders, encompasses some truly unique arachnids. Contrary to the usual solitary nature of spiders, many members of Eresidae exhibit remarkable social behavior. For example, in some species, females live together communally, share the care of young, and may even exhibit a rare trait for spiders: self-sacrifice. After the spiderlings hatch, these mothers provide their bodies as a first nutritious meal, ensuring their offspring have a strong start in life. This level of maternal investment is not only rare among spiders but also challenges our typical view of arachnids as solitary, survival-driven creatures.
