Fulgorid planthoppers
Scientific name: Fulgoridae
Description
Members of the Fulgoridae, commonly referred to as lanternflies, captivate with their strikingly elongated heads, which early naturalists believed could emit light, akin to a lantern. This myth pervades even today, though it's been scientifically debunked; these insects do not produce light. Intriguingly, despite their name, they are more closely related to cicadas than flies. These insects are pivotal in ecosystems, primarily feeding on plant sap, which indirectly influences various nutrient cycles.
