Scientific name: Gastrodontidae
Description
Members of the Gastrodontidae family are fascinating for more than just their gentle gliding motions. Contrary to common belief, these small, glossy snails found predominantly in moist woodland settings have neither a dentist’s penchant for gastronomy nor any form of stomach-footed mobility. The term Gastrodontidae misleadingly suggests these traits, derived from the Greek words for 'stomach' and 'tooth.' Scientifically, their intriguing attribute is the form of their radula—a tooth-like structure used in feeding, which is different in shape and function from typical snails, allowing them to efficiently process decomposed organic matter, playing a key role in forest ecosystems.
