Description
The Hydroptilidae, commonly known as microcaddisflies, are an intriguing marvel of nature. Despite their minuscule size, typically less than 5 millimeters long, these tiny insects play a substantial role in freshwater ecosystems. One common misconception is that all caddisflies construct protective cases; however, the larvae of Hydroptilidae are free-living, a unique adaptation among their kin. They engage in a captivating process called 'case-making' only during their pupal stage, using silk and environmental materials, showcasing nature’s inventiveness in survival strategies.
