Scientific name: Hypercompe

Description

Hypercompe caterpillars are often mistaken for being excessively venomous due to their imposing, hairy appearance. In reality, though some species can cause irritation if their hairs contact human skin, they are far from being dangerously venomous. These caterpillars transform into striking moths, often featuring stark, dramatic patterns that serve as a warning to predators. Their vibrant markings are a classic example of aposematic coloration, evolved to signal danger and deter enemies, effectively allowing them to survive by virtue of visual bluff.
