Description
Despite often being called 'mosquito hawks', Limoniidae neither prey on mosquitos nor are they hawks. These insects are actually harmless and do not feed on mosquitos; adults usually don't eat at all! Their larval stage plays a crucial role in the ecosystem, breaking down decaying plant matter and enriching the soil. Contrary to the dreaded image their nickname might suggest, crane flies are subtle contributors to the nutrient cycle, proving that not all insects need to bite or buzz to be important.
