Description
Members of the genus Malacosoma are renowned for their unique social behavior and striking tent-like structures. These caterpillars, commonly misunderstood as solitary organisms, are in fact highly social during their larval stage, living communally in silken tents. These tents provide protection from predators and weather extremes. Intriguingly, the caterpillars communicate through vibrations transmitted across the silk, coordinating their activities in a sophisticated example of insect cooperation and communication.
