Description
Members of the family Myrmeleontidae are commonly referred to as antlions, a name deriving from their fierce predatory larvae, which construct conical pits in sandy soil to trap ants and other insects. Interestingly, despite their name suggesting a specific prey, antlions are not exclusively ant eaters; their diet can include a variety of insects that stumble into their cleverly constructed traps. The adult Myrmeleontidae, contrary to the larval stage, resembles a dragonfly and seldom is seen by the casual observer, as they are primarily nocturnal and elusive.
