Tadpole shrimps
Scientific name: Notostraca
Description
The Notostraca, commonly known as tadpole shrimps, are fascinating creatures often found in temporary ponds and pools. Despite their name, these animals have no direct association with frogs or shrimps. A common misconception is that all shrimps are true crustaceans, but Notostraca possess unique adaptations that distinguish them; they have a bivalve-like shell and a flattened body. Interestingly, they can survive in extreme conditions, including drought, by entering a dormant state. This remarkable ability to withstand desiccation allows them to thrive in ephemeral habitats where few other animals can survive.
