Scorpionflies
Scientific name: Panorpidae
Description
Members of the Panorpidae, commonly known as scorpionflies, exhibit a unique and striking blend of features that might remind one of a scorpion. While their name might conjure images of venomous scorpions, scorpionflies are completely harmless to humans. These insects have a long, beak-like rostrum that houses their mouthparts and a curled abdomen that resembles a scorpion's tail but is, in fact, quite benign. Intriguingly, the male's tail is often used in a courtship display to attract females, not for defense or attack. This fascinating mimicry is purely coincidental, not a result of a shared lineage with scorpions.
