Pelecinids
Scientific name: Pelecinidae
Description
The Pelecinidae are a unique group of wasps distinguished by their incredibly long, slender abdomens, which they use with surgical precision in their reproductive process. Unlike the menacing aura that often surrounds wasps, the Pelecinidae are harmless to humans. A fascinating aspect of these insects is their highly skewed sex ratio; almost all individuals are female. These females utilize their elongate abdomens to adeptly deposit their eggs into the larvae of ground-dwelling beetles. This precise method ensures that their offspring have a nutrient-rich start in life, often leading to the mistaken belief that they are aggressive or dangerous to larger animals and humans.
