Water springtails
Scientific name: Poduridae
Description
Contrary to common belief, Poduridae don't 'jump' using their legs. Instead, they have a unique forked structure called a furcula underneath their abdomen, snapping against the ground to launch themselves into the air as a defense mechanism. This incredible leap can propel them distances up to several times their body length. Despite their tiny size and often being overlooked, Poduridae play essential roles in the ecosystem by decomposing organic material, thereby fostering nutrient cycling and soil health.
