Description
The family Psocidae often colloquially known as 'booklice,' conjures up images of pests devouring the pages of cherished library collections. However, this common portrayal is a misconception. In reality, most Psocidae feed on microscopic molds and lichens, not the paper itself. Found globally from dense rainforests to cozy indoor spaces, these often-overlooked creatures play a vital role in the decomposition of organic materials, thus contributing to nutrient cycles. Although tiny, the diverse world of Psocidae proves that even the smallest beings can have significant ecological impacts, challenging our understanding of what creatures are truly harmful.
