Pyrgotid flies
Scientific name: Pyrgotidae
Description
Unlike the common view of flies merely as nuisance pests, members of the Pyrgotidae family are specialized parasitoids of scarab beetles. Intriguingly, female Pyrgotidae locate their hosts by detecting the pheromones emitted by beetles, usually during flight. They then cleverly lay their eggs on the beetle, and their larvae, upon hatching, burrow into the beetle where they eventually consume it from the inside.
