Description
Members of the Sciaridae are not just annoying household pests as many might believe. These tiny insects play a pivotal role in the decomposition process, breaking down organic matter and contributing to soil health. Contrary to popular belief, they are not harmful to healthy plants, although their larvae can sometimes damage seedlings and young roots in high numbers. Intriguingly, research shows that some species of Sciaridae can be used as bioindicators for environmental changes, offering insights into the health of ecosystems.
