Description
Unique among many fly families, their larvae are natural enemies of snails and slugs, making them potential allies in controlling gastropod populations which are pests in agriculture and vectors of parasitic diseases. Interestingly, Sciomyzidae larvae have a specialized appetite for gastropods, invading and consuming them from the inside out. This carnivorous behavior in a fly species challenges the usual perception of flies being merely nuisances or decomposers, highlighting an intricate ecological relationship that showcases nature’s complexity and balance.
