Scolopendrids
Scientific name: Scolopendridae
Description
While their name conjures images of monstrous creatures, Scolopendridae are marvels of nature's design, adept at surviving in the darkest corners of the earth. Contrary to the hair-raising myths, they do not grow as large as human limbs, but some can reach up to 30 cm. These centipedes are equipped with venomous claws that deliver toxins capable of subduing prey much larger than themselves, including reptiles and small mammals. Their fearsome reputation is often exaggerated, but their role in controlling pests highlights their ecological importance.
