Description

Members of the genus Scolopocryptops are intriguing carnivorous centipedes. Unlike popular myths suggesting that all centipedes are venomous and deadly, Scolopocryptops species use their venom primarily to subdue small invertebrates, not as a defense against humans. Their potent venom, while painful, is not lethal to humans and serves a crucial role in controlling pest populations. Additionally, these centipedes exhibit fascinating parental care behavior, with females guarding their eggs and young 鈥?a rare trait in the invertebrate world.
