Description
Despite their nuisance reputation, Simuliidae play a significant ecological role in aquatic ecosystems. Contrary to the belief that they're merely pests, Simuliidae larvae are crucial for purifying streams and rivers as they feed on debris, enhancing water quality. Only the females bite, requiring blood for egg development, while the rest of their lifecycle is surprisingly beneficial to environmental health.
