Description
Members of the genus Spilosoma are fascinating for their defense mechanisms. These moths are known for their bright and varied colors, which serve as a warning to predators about their potential toxicity. Contrary to common belief, not all bright-colored insects are harmful, but Spilosoma cleverly mimics those that are, using their appearance to deter predators. This mimicry is an excellent example of Batesian mimicry, where a harmless species evolves to imitate the warning signals of a harmful species to avoid predation.
