Description
Members of the Tabanidae family, are often dreaded for their painful bites. Contrary to popular belief, not all species in this family bite humans; females generally require blood meals to aid in egg development while males feed on nectar. These creatures play a critical role in various ecosystems – they are not just pests but also important pollinators for some plants. Interestingly, Tabanidae are equipped with cutting-edge compound eyes which contain thousands of individual lenses, allowing them to see movements and colors effectively, making them formidable hunters in the insect world.
