Stonecase caddisflies
Scientific name: Uenoidae
Description
One may not often encounter a member of the Uenoidae family, yet these creatures perform essential roles in freshwater ecosystems. Known commonly as caddisflies, they excel in the art of architectural mimicry during their larval stage, constructing protective cases from surrounding debris. Interestingly, these aquatic artisans are often mistaken for moth larvae because of their similar appearance. Yet, unlike moths, caddisfly larvae thrive underwater, playing a crucial role in aquatic food chains and as indicators of water quality. Their unique adaptation challenges the common misconception that all flying insects with larval life stages develop on land.
