Description
The genus Volucella comprises a fascinating group of large hoverflies, often seen in gardens mimicking bumblebees and wasps. This mimicry serves as a remarkable evolutionary advantage, making predators think twice before attacking due to the perceived threat of stings. Despite their imposing appearance, members of Volucella are harmless and play an essential role in pollination. Interestingly, their larvae live in wasp nests, where they act as scavengers, contributing to the nest's hygiene by feeding on detritus.
