Description
Contrary to the disdain usually shown towards them, the Calliphoridae, play a critical role in our ecosystems. While their larvae, typically called maggots, might appear unsettling, they are paramount in the process of decomposition and nutrient cycling, breaking down animal carcasses that would otherwise litter the landscape. Furthermore, forensic entomologists often use the developmental stages of Calliphoridae larvae to estimate time of death in criminal investigations, providing valuable data in solving cases. Thus, these flies, far from being mere pests, are indispensable agents in both natural and forensic sciences.
