Description
Members of the Heptageniidae, commonly known as flat-headed mayflies, exhibit a fascinating adaptation to their aquatic lifestyle, with nymphs possessing broad, flat heads that help them resist fast-flowing currents in rivers and streams. A common misconception is that all mayflies have very short adult lives. While it’s true that adult Heptageniidae live only for a few days, their babies can last for up to a year, during which time they play a crucial role in aquatic ecosystems by processing organic matter and serving as a vital food source for various fish species. This lifecycle intricately highlights their ecological importance far beyond their fleeting adult existence.
