Description
Despite their name suggesting a fondness for water, not all Hydrophilidae are aquatic. Commonly known as water beetles, this diverse family embraces both water-loving and terrestrial species. Many Hydrophilidae play a crucial ecological role by feeding on algae and decomposing organic material, thereby contributing to the nutrient cycling in aquatic ecosystems. A fascinating aspect of these beetles is their ability to carry a bubble of air underwater, essentially creating a 'diving bell' that allows them to breathe while submerged.
