Keelback slugs
Scientific name: Limacidae
Description
Limacidae are often mistaken for being simply pests in gardens; however, their presence is crucial for decomposing organic matter and recycling nutrients back into the soil. Interestingly, these creatures are devoid of a protective shell unlike their snail cousins, which makes them more vulnerable but allows for a more flexible and faster movement in moist environments. Clarifying another misconception—despite sometimes being called 'naked snails', they are not underdeveloped or incomplete snails, but rather a distinct group that evolved to lose their shells as an adaptation to their specific ecological niches.
