Description
The fascinating Phengodidae, are a remarkable group that illuminates the night with their bioluminescent bodies. However that it's predominantly the females and larvae that exhibit this glowing behavior. Male Phengodidae, contrastingly, bear more resemblance to typical beetles and don't emit light. This bioluminescence serves a crucial evolutionary function, as it aids the larvae in preying on millipedes and attracting mates. Intriguingly, while many assume all beetles can fly, female Phengodidae are generally wingless, challenging our typical perceptions of beetles.
