Crescents
Scientific name: Phyciodes

Description

Members of the genus Phyciodes are notably intricate in their life cycles, particularly with their symbiotic relationship with specific host plants during their larval stage. Contrary to what might be believed, these species do not undergo metamorphosis inside the chrysalis by simply 'rearranging' their existing cells but dramatically break down their larval body to a cellular soup, from which the adult form then develops. This transformation process, while common amongst butterflies, exemplifies the remarkable cellular and genetic choreographies in nature.
