Description
Plataspidae, the Kudzu bug, often a bane for farmers, is far from being just an agricultural pest. Interestingly, these bugs, native to Asia, were only confirmed in the USA in 2009, rapidly spotlighting their aggressive invasion capabilities. Far from common belief, Plataspidae do not damage crops by chewing leaves; instead, they pierce plant tissues, sucking out the sap and weakening the host. Despite their notorious reputation, they are intriguing for their distinctive aggregation behavior, forming large clusters that can sometimes cover entire plant sections.
