Prociphilus
Scientific name: Prociphilus

Description

Members of the genus Prociphilus are fascinating creatures, often mistaken for mere plant pests. However, these aphids have a unique mutualistic relationship with ants. The ants protect them from predators and, in return, feed on the sweet honeydew that the aphids excrete. Intriguingly, many species within this genus are root feeders as nymphs, spending part of their lives underground, a lifestyle that drastically differs from the leaf-dwelling life commonly associated with aphids.
