Featherwing beetles
Scientific name: Ptiliidae
Description
Despite their minuscule size, the Ptiliidae, often dubbed 'feather-winged beetles,' are marvels of biodiversity. Most of these beetles are less than 1mm (around 0.04inch) long, claiming the title of the smallest beetles in the world. What might be construed as delicate, their feather-like hind wings are actually an ingenious adaption for better maneuverability in their micro-habitats, such as under bark or in leaf litter, not mere ornamentation. This adaptation underscores nature’s brilliant solution to challenges posed by miniature life environments.
