Description

Members of the genus Schistocerca are renowned for their incredible ability to transform from solitary, harmless insects into swarms of voracious locusts under specific environmental conditions. This fascinating phenomenon, known as phase polymorphism, changes their physiology and behavior. Contrary to the common misconception, not all species within this genus are pests; some species' swarming behavior is a rare or non-existent event. This adaptation allows Schistocerca to exploit sparse resources over vast geographic regions.
