Dobsonflies and fishflies
Scientific name: Corydalidae
Description
One striking fact about the male Corydalidae is their incredibly oversized mandibles, which, contrary to their intimidating appearance, are too unwieldy for hunting. Rather, they serve as a visual threat to rivals and a display during courtship. These insects spend most of their life as naiads underwater, up to several years, before transforming into adults for a brief glorious spell of a few weeks.
