Fishflies
Scientific name: Megaloptera
Description
The order Megaloptera, comprising insects such as dobsonflies and alderflies, is often mistaken for purely aquatic creatures due to their larval stages. Fascinatingly, some species of Megaloptera have larval forms that can live in water for several years, but adults possess a remarkably short lifespan, sometimes lasting only a few days. A common misconception is that all members of Megaloptera are aggressive due to their large mandibles; however, these impressive jaws are primarily used for mating and feeding on softer prey. Thus, while their appearance may be intimidating, they pose little threat to humans.
