Common earwigs
Scientific name: Forficulidae
Description
Forficulidae are often misunderstood creatures due to their slightly menacing pincers. Contrary to popular belief, these insects are harmless to humans and do not crawl into ears to lay eggs—a myth that haunts many. These pincers are primarily used for defense and during courtship rituals rather than aggression. Intriguingly, earwigs are one of the few non-social insect species that show maternal care, with mothers protecting and cleaning the eggs until they hatch. This nurturing behavior is quite rare among insects, demonstrating a complex side to these often vilified creatures.
